Perkins Wuxi actively promotes localized production
In July this year, the 1106 series engine officially rolled off the production line in Wuxi. The new production line uses the latest and most advanced manufacturing equipment and processes to ensure the supply of engines of the highest quality. From the moment assembly begins on each engine, a series of systems and control measures provide operators with all necessary information and instructions, ensuring that every engine is assembled exactly according to the specifications required by the customer. Experiences related to all aspects of quality absorbed from other Perkins factories around the world are reflected in the Wuxi Engine Industrial Park. Through production execution systems, defect-free advancement concepts, and validation within the manufacturing process
In July this year, the 1106 series engines officially rolled off the production line in Wuxi. The new production line uses the latest and most advanced manufacturing equipment and processes to ensure the supply of the highest quality engines. From the moment assembly begins, each engine is supported by a series of systems and control measures that provide operators with all necessary information and instructions, ensuring every engine is assembled exactly to the customer's required specifications.
Experience related to all aspects of quality absorbed from other Perkins factories around the world is reflected in the Wuxi Engine Industrial Park. Through production execution systems, defect-free advancement concepts, and validation during manufacturing processes, engines assembled here undergo the same rigorous quality control procedures as those produced at the UK headquarters in Peterborough and in Griffin, North America.
However, product quality depends not only on the systems used but more importantly on the employees responsible for production. The quality of Wuxi personnel has been unanimously recognized by Perkins senior management. The factory collaborates closely every year with Wuxi Automotive Engineering School to help recruit new employees. Applicants must participate in a four-week onboarding course at Perkins and finally undergo a strict test, which requires disassembling and then reassembling an engine within a limited time. Successful candidates prove to have a genuine deep understanding of engines.
It is precisely this full integration of systems and technology that makes the Wuxi Engine Industrial Park not just a manufacturing base but also Perkins' most effective promotional asset in China. Now, more than 100 people visit the facility every week, including customers, suppliers, and Perkins internal staff from other regions, all of whom leave the industrial park with a very deep impression of the facility.
The entire industrial park works together to build a culture of continuous improvement. Employees firmly believe there are many opportunities for improvement and must always be ready to meet customers' ever-increasing demands in quality, delivery time, and cost. By embedding Six Sigma management concepts into processes, systems, products, and services, they constantly pursue perfection and aim to exceed customer expectations.
It is expected that by 2015, the output of the 1106 series production line will reach over 130,000 engines. Together with the existing 400 and 1104 production lines, the total output of the entire Wuxi industrial park will reach 160,000 engines. This accounts for 30% of the global total production of these three Perkins engine series. This layout is based on the forecast that demand in China will continue to rise steadily.
This will also have a positive impact on the local employment market in Wuxi. Currently, the industrial park employs about 300 people, but it is estimated that by 2015 this number will increase to nearly 700.
At the same time, more and more component supplies will be localized gradually to help achieve the above production targets. Calculated by component value, the 1106 engine models will eventually have 85% of their components supplied by local suppliers. Perkins will intensify efforts to identify local suppliers and help them establish efficient and high-level production systems.
