Today we will talk about Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)


If you are using a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, you need to use Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) for the system to operate. Perkins brand products utilize SCR and are specifically designed to reduce the amount of DEF in your system. The advantage is very simple – if your customer's fuel consumption decreases, they save money. It is easier to package, the DEF tank to be installed is more compact, and it requires less storage space.

  The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) process in the engine is invisible to the operator. They only need to ensure that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank is refilled as needed.

  To keep operator running costs at a minimum, Perkins has minimized the required amount of DEF (as a percentage of the diesel used). For the Perkins 1200 series engines using SCR, the required DEF amount is 3%-4% of the diesel used. For the Perkins 854 series engines using SCR, the required amount is approximately 3%-5% of the diesel used.

  

 

  What is DEF?

  DEF is chemical-grade urea in solution. It is a liquid at room temperature, composed of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water.

  What is the best DEF for Perkins engines?

  Operators can use any commercial DEF that meets the ISO 22241 specification in Perkins engines equipped with SCR. They can purchase it from various retail locations, such as truck stops on highways or auto parts stores, or arrange for bulk delivery from fuel dealers or DEF manufacturers.

  What are the storage requirements for DEF?

  Operators need to consider several factors when purchasing DEF, including DEF's shelf life, storage temperature, and sealing requirements.

Temperature

  The optimal storage temperature for DEF is 15-77 °F (-9 to 25 °C). When DEF is stored at temperatures above 90 °F/32 °C, the corrosion rate increases significantly. Its freezing point is 12 °F/-11 °C.

Sunlight

  Exposure to sunlight shortens the shelf life of DEF.

Sealing

  DEF requires specific container standards, and there are some restrictions on the types of containers that can store DEF.

  Operators need to consider the materials involved when transporting and handling DEF. If they pump DEF from large-volume tanks, they should pay special attention to the materials used in the fuel and pumps.
