Causes and Precautions of Engine Cylinder Gasket Erosion!


The cylinder gasket is mainly used to ensure the seal between the cylinder block and the cylinder head joint surface, preventing air and water leakage. The cylinder gasket is in direct contact with high-temperature, high-pressure combustion gases, so it is easily eroded during use, especially around the cylinder mouth flange. After the cylinder gasket is burned, the engine's operating condition will deteriorate severely, and it can also easily cause damage to certain related parts or areas. How to determine cylinder gasket burn damage and how to solve it! 1. Causes of cylinder gasket erosion (1) Uneven tightening force of the cylinder gasket or incorrect tightening method causes the gasket not to lie flat on the joint surface between the cylinder block and the cylinder head, leading to gas leakage. (2) Cylinder head warping

 

  The cylinder gasket is mainly used to ensure the seal between the cylinder block and the cylinder head joint surface, preventing air and water leakage. The cylinder gasket is directly exposed to high temperature and high-pressure combustion gases, so it is easily eroded during use, especially around the cylinder mouth edge. After the cylinder gasket is burned, the engine's working condition will deteriorate severely, and it can easily cause damage to certain related parts or areas.

 

  How to judge cylinder gasket burn damage and how to solve it!

  

 

  1. Causes of cylinder gasket erosion

  (1) Uneven tightening force of the cylinder gasket or incorrect tightening method causes the gasket not to lie flat on the joint surface between the cylinder block and the cylinder head, leading to gas leakage.

  (2) Warping and deformation of the cylinder head, excessive unevenness of the cylinder block surface, and loosening of the cylinder head bolts cause poor sealing.

  (3) Improper driving operation, such as frequent sudden acceleration and high-speed running, causes excessive pressure that accelerates gasket erosion.

  (4) The engine often operates under heavy load, early ignition timing, overheating, knocking, etc., causing local high temperature and high pressure inside the cylinder, which erodes the gasket.

  (5) Early fuel injection timing; severe carbon deposits in the combustion chamber; improper diesel fuel selection.

  (6) Poor quality of the gasket, uneven thickness; presence of air bubbles inside the sealing edge, uneven asbestos laying, or loose edging.

 

 

  2. Symptoms of cylinder gasket erosion failure

  1. Burn damage at the bridge between two adjacent cylinders: sudden power drop during engine operation, noticeable speed reduction; severe engine vibration and slight exhaust backpressure; difficulty starting after engine shutdown or extremely unstable idle speed.

  2. Burn damage between the cylinder mouth and the cooling water passage: sudden rise in water temperature during engine operation, dull speed, power drop, rapid coolant consumption; water vapor discharged from the exhaust pipe, especially at idle, with exhaust showing a light yellow color; crankcase oil level rises, severe oil emulsification; rust marks at the radiator water inlet. If the burn damage is severe, a large amount of coolant will enter the cylinder, causing the engine to fail to start.

  3. Burn damage between the cylinder mouth and the lubrication oil passage. Symptoms: unstable oil pressure and rapid oil temperature rise; bubbles in the lubricating oil, lighter color with diesel smell, accelerated oxidation and deterioration of the lubricant, and excessive consumption; large amounts of blue smoke emitted from the exhaust pipe when the diesel engine is cold.

  4. Burn damage between the cylinder mouth and the gasket edge. Symptoms: mild burn damage manifests as engine power loss, sluggish acceleration, especially noticeable under heavy load, unstable idle speed, and severe engine vibration; severe burn damage produces rhythmic "chatter" sounds in the middle to upper part of the cylinder.

  5. Burn damage between the cylinder mouth and the cylinder head bolt hole: unstable engine idle; slight "chatter" sound at the valve cover; frequent loosening of cylinder bolts (nuts).

 

 

  3. Emergency measures for cylinder gasket erosion during operation

  If cylinder gasket burn damage is found during driving and no spare parts are available, the following emergency measures can be taken: remove the gasket and carefully inspect it. If there is a small puncture, it can be filled with tin foil from a cigarette pack, waste solder from electrical appliances, asbestos thread, or similar materials, then carefully hammered flat and compacted; if the damaged area is larger, a piece of dry cowhide gasket or a cut piece from the same part of a discarded gasket can be patched as a temporary substitute. After returning to the workshop, repair according to technical specifications. During use and maintenance, the gasket should have sufficient strength under high temperature and high-pressure gas to avoid damage; it should also have heat resistance, corrosion resistance, some elasticity to compensate for the flatness of the joint surface, and good sealing performance; it should be easy to install and remove without sticking to the cylinder and have a long service life. Currently, asbestos gaskets are widely used, structured with metal wires sandwiched in asbestos, copper edging around water holes, and copper lining around combustion chamber holes to prevent high-temperature erosion.

 

 

  4. Precautions during installation and maintenance

  1. When removing cylinder head bolts to replace the gasket, it must be done after the engine has completely cooled to avoid warping and deformation of the cylinder head.

  2. Check the gasket surface for dents, bulges, damage, etc.; check whether the flatness of the cylinder head and block meets requirements, then clean the gasket, cylinder head, and block thoroughly, and blow dry with high-pressure air to prevent dirt from affecting the seal.

  3. The selected gasket must be a reliable original part that meets the required specifications and models. Pay attention to the orientation marks during installation to prevent incorrect installation and avoid human errors.

  4. Tighten the cylinder head bolts according to technical specifications, symmetrically expanding from the center to both ends in a cross pattern, tightening in 2 to 4 stages to the specified torque; then tighten once more when the engine is hot for better reliability.

  5. If cylinder head bolts are rusted and cannot be removed, do not pry with iron tools to avoid damaging the cylinder head. Instead, soak the bolt holes with kerosene for a while to facilitate removal.

  6. Improper storage of the cylinder head, careless disassembly and assembly, gasket damage or deformation, and unclean installation will cause poor performance and poor sealing, leading to human errors that must be taken seriously.

  When replacing the cylinder gasket, operate patiently and meticulously according to technical standards, especially strictly following the engine manufacturer's specified sequence, tightening torque, and tightening method for the cylinder head bolts. Only in this way can high-quality sealing of the cylinder gasket be ensured. At the same time, analyze the causes of gasket erosion, eliminate related faults accordingly, improve equipment operation methods, and avoid rough handling to effectively extend the service life of the cylinder gasket.
