Some things about oil filters and oil leaks you need to know!
Oil filter, also known as "oil cartridge." It is used to remove impurities such as dust, metal particles, carbon deposits, soot particles, and gums from the oil to protect the engine. Filter paper: The requirements for filter paper in oil filters are higher than those for air filters, mainly because the oil temperature varies from 0 to 300 degrees. High-quality oil filter paper must be able to filter impurities under drastic temperature changes while ensuring sufficient flow. Note: Inferior and cheap filter paper is often made from cotton pulp paper, which has very poor filtration performance, is more prone to decomposing and dissolving into the oil, clogging oil passages, accelerating oil deterioration, and even the absence of a filter element will accelerate engine damage.

Rubber sealing ring:
High-quality oil filter sealing rings are made from special rubber compounds to ensure 100% no oil leakage.
Note: A good oil filter will not leak oil under normal installation. Low-quality cheap ones often have many leakage problems.
Return flow check valve:
Only found in high-quality oil filters. When the engine is turned off, it prevents the oil filter from drying out; when the engine restarts, it immediately generates pressure to supply oil to lubricate the engine. (Also called a check valve)
Note: Maintains lubrication system pressure and reduces wear. Low-quality cheap oil filters lack a check valve, accelerating wear during engine startup.
Overflow valve/Bypass valve:
Only found in high-quality oil filters. When the external temperature drops to a certain value or the oil filter exceeds its normal service life, the overflow valve opens under special pressure, allowing unfiltered oil to flow directly into the engine to lubricate friction parts—unfiltered impurities increase engine wear. Therefore, the overflow valve is critical for protecting the engine in emergencies. (Also called a bypass valve)
Note: Regularly replace the oil filter (replace it every time you change the oil) to avoid accelerated engine wear caused by the overflow valve opening. Low-quality cheap oil filters lack an overflow valve; in special cases, lack of oil supply can cause engine scoring, major repairs, or even scrapping.

Regarding oil leakage issues after replacing the oil filter
1. For spin-on filters (metal shell), excessive torque beyond the standard 20-60 Newtons (1 kg = 9.8 N) can cause problems. The correct installation torque is about 2 kg hand-tight; avoid using wrenches. Torque over 2.5 kg can deform the sealing ring, creating raised points along the circumference. Under high-pressure airflow impact, gaps form causing leaks. 2. The contact surface where the old oil filter was attached is not cleaned properly. 3. When removing the old oil filter, if excessive torque was used previously, the old sealing ring may stick to the filter base, causing leaks when the new filter is installed. 4. Severe contamination in the lubrication system, heavy sludge blocking the main oil passage (or sealant blocking oil passages after overhaul), causes internal pressure that impacts the sealing ring leading to leaks. 5. For eco-friendly filters (paper filters), most often the inner sealing ring on the guide rod is not removed, and a new sealing ring is installed on top. 6. When replacing eco-friendly filters (paper filters), the new inner sealing ring is not replaced. 7. For eco-friendly filters (paper filters), excessive torque on the outer sealing ring (large one) causes serious deformation or hidden damage, leading to leaks under pressure during operation.
