A brief introduction for everyone: Perkins 400 series engine

The Perkins 400 series engines are indirect injection engines. The engine is controlled by a mechanically driven fuel injection pump. The engine cylinders are arranged in a straight line. Each cylinder on the cylinder head assembly has one intake valve and one exhaust valve. Each cylinder valve has a valve spring. The piston has two compression rings and one oil control ring. Ensuring the correct piston height is important so that the piston does not contact the cylinder head. The correct piston height also ensures effective fuel combustion (which is necessary) to meet emission requirements. The crankshaft of the two-cylinder engine has two main bearing journals. Perkins 400 series engines are all indirect injection engines. The engine is controlled by a mechanically driven fuel injection pump. The engine cylinders are arranged in a straight line.

Each cylinder on the cylinder head assembly has one intake valve and one exhaust valve. Each cylinder's valve has a valve spring.

The piston has two compression rings and one oil control ring. Ensuring the correct piston height is important so that the piston does not contact the cylinder head. The correct piston height also ensures effective fuel combustion (which is necessary) to meet emission requirements.

The crankshaft of a two-cylinder engine has two main bearing journals.

The crankshaft of a three-cylinder engine has four main bearing journals.

The crankshaft of a four-cylinder engine has five main bearing journals.

Axial clearance is controlled by thrust washers on the rear main bearing.

To ensure correct gear assembly, timing marks are stamped on the timing gears. When cylinder No. 1 is at the top dead center of its compression stroke, the marked teeth on the crankshaft gear and camshaft gear should align with the idler gear.

The crankshaft gear drives the idler gear, which in turn drives the camshaft gear and the engine oil pump gear.

The fuel injection pump is installed in the engine block. The operation of the fuel injection pump is controlled by the cam on the camshaft. The fuel transfer pump is located on the right side of the engine block. Its operation is also controlled by the cam on the camshaft.

The fuel injection pump complies with emission regulations. If any adjustments to the fuel injection pump timing or high idle speed are needed, please contact us or your Perkins distributor. Some fuel injection pumps use mechanical governors to control engine speed. Some use electronic control governors.

The trochoid oil pump is located in the middle of the idler gear. The engine oil pump delivers oil to the main oil gallery through a safety valve and the engine oil filter. The rocker arms receive high-pressure oil through external oil pipes installed between the main oil gallery and the engine block.

The coolant flowing out from the bottom of the radiator passes through a belt-driven centrifugal water pump. The coolant is cooled by the radiator and its temperature is regulated by a water temperature regulator.

The engine's efficiency, emission control efficiency, and performance depend on following the correct operation and maintenance recommendations. The engine's performance and efficiency also rely on using the recommended fuel, lubricating oil, and coolant.
