Belt Inspection/Adjustment/Replacement

Maintenance cycle every 500 operating hours or 1 year

 

  Today, using the fan drive belt of the Perkins 4008-30 engine as an example, we will briefly explain the specific steps for the inspection/adjustment/replacement of this belt part.

 

Belt Inspection

  

  Step 1, isolate the engine power supply.

  Step 2, visually inspect the fan guard for wear or damage. Repair as needed.

  Step 3, remove inspection guard (X) and inspection guard (Y). As shown below:

  Step 4, check belt (1) for cracks. Check if the belt is dirty. Replace the belt if necessary.

  Step 5, belt tension must be checked at position A. Use an appropriate spring scale and a suitable ruler to check the belt tension.

  Step 6, belt tension should be 62 N (14 lb), with a maximum deflection of 16 mm (0.63 inch) at position B.

  Step 7, if the belt tension is above or below 62 N (14 lb), adjust the belt.

  Step 8, install inspection guard (X) and inspection guard (Y).

  Step 9, restore engine power supply.

  

Belt Adjustment

  

(Typical example)

  Step 1, be sure to disconnect the engine power supply. Remove the guard as needed.

  Step 2, loosen bolt (5) then loosen lock nut (4).

  Step 3, turn rod (3) to achieve the correct belt tension for belt (1).

  Step 4, tighten lock nut (4) to a torque of 120 N·m (88.5 lb ft). Securely tighten bolt (5).

  Step 5, be sure to disconnect the engine power supply. Install the guard.

 

Belt Replacement

 

  Note: The fan drive belt must be replaced as a kit. Do not replace individual belts.

 

Fan Drive Belt Removal

  

(Typical example)

  Step 1, be sure to disconnect the engine power supply. Remove the guard as needed.

  Step 2, loosen bolt (5) then loosen lock nut (4).

  Step 3, turn rod (3) until pulley (2) faces the engine center.

  Step 4, remove belt (1).

  Fan Drive Belt Installation

  1. Install the new belt (1) onto the pulley.

  2. Turn rod (3) to achieve an initial tension of 77 N (17 lb). Total deflection must not exceed 16 mm (0.63 inch).

  3. Tighten lock nut (4) to a torque of 120 N·m (88.5 lb ft). Securely tighten bolt (5).

  4. Rotate the fan drive belt pulley three to four turns to ensure the fan drive belt is installed correctly. Ensure the tension remains at 77 N (17 lb).

  5. Restore engine power supply. Install the guard.

  6. Run the engine for 15 to 20 minutes. For correct procedures, carefully follow the technical operation and maintenance manual to start the engine.

  7. Stop the engine. For correct procedures, carefully follow the technical operation and maintenance manual to shut down the engine.

  8. Isolate the engine power supply. Remove the guard.

  9. Loosen bolt (5) then loosen lock nut (4).

  10. Turn rod (3) to achieve a final tension of 62 N (14 lb). Total deflection must not exceed 16 mm (0.63 inch).

  11. Tighten lock nut (4) to a torque of 120 N·m (88.5 lb ft). Securely tighten bolt (5).

  12. Restore engine power supply. Install the guard.
