  The principle of turbocharging is to use the kinetic and internal energy of the engine's exhaust gas to drive a turbine, which in turn drives another turbine connected to it, compressing air and blowing it into the engine cylinder. The biggest advantage of a turbocharged engine is that it can significantly increase the engine's power and torque without increasing the engine displacement.

   Turbocharger It uses the exhaust gas discharged from the engine to drive the turbine. The turbine drives the coaxial impeller to rotate at high speed. Fresh air is compressed by the impeller and enters the engine cylinder, thereby increasing the engine's charging volume, allowing the fuel to burn more fully and increasing the engine's output power by nearly 40%. The working environment of the turbocharger is very harsh, often under high temperature and high pressure conditions, so correct use and maintenance are very important.

Do not start driving immediately when the engine is cold

  After starting the engine, do not step on the accelerator pedal suddenly. Let it idle for 3-5 minutes first. This is to raise the oil temperature, improve its flow performance, and ensure the turbocharger is fully lubricated before increasing the engine speed and starting to drive.

Do not turn off the engine immediately after high-speed operation

  The engine running at high speed should not be turned off suddenly, otherwise the oil lubrication will be interrupted, and the heat inside the turbocharger cannot be carried away by the oil, which can easily cause the turbocharger shaft and bearing to seize. In addition, after the engine is suddenly turned off, the oil flow to the turbocharger stops. If the exhaust manifold temperature is very high at this time, the heat will be absorbed by the turbocharger housing, causing the oil inside the turbocharger to carbonize. When this carbon buildup increases, it will block the oil inlet, causing oil starvation to the bearing, accelerating wear between the turbo shaft and bearing, and even causing severe seizure. Therefore, before turning off the engine, it should idle for about 3 minutes to allow the turbocharger rotor speed to decrease. However, the turbocharged engine should not idle for too long, otherwise the turbocharger may suffer poor lubrication due to low oil pressure. Generally, idling time should not exceed 10 minutes.

  Do not neglect engine oil and filter

  The clearance between the turbocharger shaft and bearing is very small, so the engine oil and filter must be kept clean to prevent impurities from entering. Otherwise, the oil's lubrication ability will decrease, causing premature failure of the turbocharger.

Air filter is equally important

  Clean the air filter regularly to prevent dust and other impurities from entering the high-speed rotating compressor impeller, which can cause unstable speed or increased wear on the bearing and seals.

Regular inspection is essential

  Always pay attention to whether the turbocharger has abnormal noise or increased vibration, and ensure there are no leaks in the lubrication oil pipes and joints.

  From the above, it is not difficult to see that turbocharged engines require special attention in two aspects during regular use: one is to use good engine oil, which also leads to higher maintenance costs compared to ordinary naturally aspirated engines; the other is to warm up the engine before driving and avoid turning off the engine immediately after parking.
